In September 2011 Dr. Lawrence attended the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) conference in New Orleans, LA. This meeting allowed these individuals to explore upcoming challenges in veterinary medicine and their implications on the licensing of qualified individuals in each state with subsequent ramifications on the mission statement of the licensing boards which is to protect the public from unqualified individuals.

In November 2011 Dr. Lawrence attended a CVTEA meeting in Chicago, IL. This committee comes together twice a year to discuss and approve the accreditation of veterinary technician programs in the United States and Canada.

In December 2011 Dr. Lawrence presented to the Alabama Board of Veterinary Medicine a power point presentation concerning the activities of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). This meeting was the result of the outreach efforts of AAVSB and that organization’s obligation to its member Boards to provide up to date information about VIVA, PAVE, VTNE, and RACE.

In January of 2012 the AAVSB Board of Directors held their winter meeting in Puerto Rico late. As treasurer of the organization one of Dr. Lawrence’s duties was to present a budget to the Board for the upcoming year. While in Puerto Rico, Dr. Lawrence, along with two other members of the Board of Directors met with the Puerto Rican Board of Veterinary Medicine. This was an engaging discussion of the services provided by AAVSB. The Board was encouraged to send a representative to the AAVSB 2012 annual meeting in Seattle, WA.

In February of 2012 Dr. Lawrence attended the Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, NV. This is one of the largest conferences in the United States. A veterinarian is able to receive up to forty-five hours of continuing education in five days. The meeting allows veterinarians to catch up on the latest developments in veterinary medicine and surgery. From Las Vegas, NV Dr. Lawrence flew to Columbus, OH to meet with six veterinarians from Iraqi. These veterinarians were exploring ways to develop licensing and testing in their country to help regulate veterinary medicine among the 10,000 veterinarians in Iraqi.

Dr. Lawrence continues to be actively with the AVMA committee, the Committee for Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA).  This committee provides accreditation of veterinary technician programs.  Accreditation ensures a school’s commitment to educational quality through rigorous and continual peer review.  Graduates from an AVMA accredited school is a prerequisite for licensure or certification. His appointment runs 2009-2015. The committee has its spring meeting in April of 2012.
